"Frightened Eyes"

1 - Just travelling on a bus
2 - From a friend's house,
3 - And all these people are looking at me.
4 - They're gazing out windows,
5 - In any English country gardens.

6 - But as gazes meet,
7 - Vacancy shows on screen.
8 - But I feel inside
9 - The latent hysteria:
10 - "Why is she looking at me?"

11 - And as I drift from one to one I can see
12 - They're all like me.
13 - They've all got frightened eyes
14 - Saying what they're thinking,
15 - What they are doing tonight.

16 - They've all got frightened eyes,
17 - Saying, "Leave me alone,
18 - I'm perfectly safe here inside.
19 - Please don't surprise me."

20 - Expressionless.
21 - Everyone here loves cheap wine--
22 - We all know good taste,
23 - We just get too busy trying to find
24 - The right games to play.

25 - Impatient, aren't we all?
26 - Watching the time trip by.
27 - And all these people are looking at me.
28 - They're gazing out windows.
29 - They're burning up in there.

30 - And as I drift from one to one I can see
31 - They're all like me.
32 - They've all got frightened eyes
33 - Saying what they're thinking,
34 - What they are doing tonight.

35 - They've all got frightened eyes,
36 - Saying, "Leave me alone,
37 - I'm perfectly safe here inside.
38 - Please don't surprise me."
