A edição americana da Billboard publicou a sua lista com os 100 melhores discos de rap da história e ela deve gerar discussão. Não tanto pelos escolhidos, mas pelas posições em que alguns discos ficaram e uma má representação de certos nomes.

Sobre os três primeiros lugares, não há muito o que falar. O fã de hip-hop pode ter outros favoritos, mas "Illmatic", de Nas (1994), "The Chronic", de Dr. Dre e "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" , estreia solo da vocalista dos Fugees (1998) têm influência e importância musical e cultural para compor o top 3.

Por outro lado, alguns discos que sempre foram muito celebrados por críticos, fãs e artistas do gênero, ficaram em posições mais baixas. Exemplos? "Raising Hell" do Run-D.M.C em 96°, "Fear Of A Black Planet", do Public Enemy em 89°, "Paul's Boutique", dos Beastie Boys, em 45°, "To Pimp A Butterfly", de Kendrick Lamar em 54° e "The Marshall Mathers LP", de Eminem, em sua única aparição na lista, no 30° lugar.

O top 100 abrange quase 40 anos de história do gênero. "Radio", de LL Cool J (1985) é a presença mais antiga, "Call Me if You Get Lost", lançado por Tyler The Creator em 2022, em 72°, a mais recente. "My Turn", de Lil Baby no centésimo posto, é o único outro representante desta segunda década do século 21.

Justificando o primeiro lugar, a Billboard pergunta: "O que resta a dizer sobre o álbum de estreia de Nasir Jones?" e prossegue: "o porta-estandarte do rap dos anos 90, "Illmatic" mudou a forma como os álbuns de rap eram feitos. Tudo nele mudou o jogo."

O texto lembra que foi Nas quem começou a trabalhar com múltiplos produtores e que nada nele soa supérfluo ou fora do lugar.

Em números de presença no top 100, os campeões são Jay Z e Kanye West, ambos com três discos cada, mais o trabalho que gravaram em conjunto, totalizando quatro aparições. Kendrick Lamar e Outkast emplacaram três LPs no ranking.
